Before you begin:
Install latest USB drivers for Xiaomi on your PC. Click here to download.
Install adb-and-fastboot driver on PC as well, click here to install them right away.
Enable developer options on your device and also enable OEM unlocking from developer option.

Download and install Magisk manager apk latest from here
Download and extract the patched boot files from the link below according to the security patch on your device,
Download patched boot.img for December security patch from here
Download patched boot.img for January security patch from here
Process to to root Xiaomi Mi A1 Android 8.0 Oreo
Turn off your device completely.
Now press and hold volume down+power buttons to boot into fastboot mode.
Connect your phone to PC and open the folder where you have extracted the boot.img file.
Now Press Shift + Right Mouse click on any empty area in the same folder and choose ‘Open Command window here’ as shown to open command window.
In the command window type the following command. (If showing waiting for device for too long, follow this guide to resolve the issue)
fastboot boot patched_boot.img
Once done, type
adb reboot
Your device will reboot, after reboot install magisk manager apk and install the Magisk installer via direct method.
